Frequently asked Questions about Toronto Media & Film College PDF Print E-mail

Has your training worked for others?

Yes! TFC graduates are working as editors, scriptwriters, camera operators and directors. Some have become producers, while others have started their own successful businesses! The skills you learn at our College will help you achieve your career ambitions.

Do I need to buy specialized equipment or a camera?

No. We supply everything you need – editing software, computers, cameras, lights and all necessary equipment. Some students bring their own laptop computers, so they can complete class assignments on their own computer, but TFC provides computers for students who want to work on these assignments at the College.

Do you arrange internship opportunities for the students?

Yes. We do not guarantee students an internship, but one of our staff members coordinates internships with production companies in Toronto. We make sure these internships fit into the student’s schedule, and expose the student to a professional work experience.

Does Toronto Media & Film College help students find work after they graduate?

Colleges cannot guarantee that a student will find work after they graduate. No reputable school will make this promise.

However, Toronto Media & Film College has the best career centre in the business!  Every student takes the “Career Start Program”.  This proprietary program is taught to students in the last semester of their Program, and shows the students how to find work in the industry.

Students are taught the differences between a business resume and a resume for the entertainment business. We teach you how to write a winning resume that really helps you get a job.  You will learn how to write a cover letter that sells your abilities, and highlights your unique skill set.

In addition, you receive a career action binder, and we show you how to organize your job search by the week, and month. But that’s not all! We show you how to use this integrated system to maximize your ability to find work in the industry. Finally, even after you graduate, the Career Centre at the College will continue to help you. A Career Counselor is available to update your resume, help you write a cover letter or provide you with career assistance. In addition, when we receive a job posting from an employer, every graduate is notified.

The “Career Start Program” is the best movie/TV career development program available anywhere. This is a free program, and is only available to Toronto Media & Film College students.

Will Toronto Media & Film College help students find housing?

Yes. Two months before the term starts, a staff member starts looking for suitable apartments that are close to the College. She personally inspects them to ensure they are clean, safe and presentable. Students who need accommodation are contacted by e-mail, so when they arrive in Toronto they can inspect the apartments. There is no charge for this service. When 2-3 students share an apartment, it reduces the cost to an affordable level.

When foreign or out of town students arrive in Toronto, they can stay at a Hotel/Hostel in downtown Toronto that costs $49 (CDN) per night. You stay in a private room, equipped with a desk, sink and closet for clothes. Typically, students stay in this Hotel/hostel for less than a week before they find a satisfactory apartment to share with other students.

What about airport pickup?

Yes. We will pick you up at the airport, the first time you arrive in Toronto. Simply let us know your flight number, the airline you are flying with and time of arrival. A representative from the College will pick you up, and transport you to downtown Toronto. This service is free.

Do I need prior film training in order to be accepted into TFC Programs?

No. You must be a high school graduate, but our training is designed to teach you all the professional production skills. We start with the basics, and progressively teach you more advanced skills. As a result, we do not require any prerequisites skills, or special training to enroll in our Programs. We teach the skills you need. Is your Diploma a recognized educational credential?Yes! Our curriculum and courses were approved by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. This process took nearly one year, and we are authorized to grant a recognized Diploma in each of our Programs.
